A client from here in Salina recently contacted Nu Image Audio to inquire about adding a camera-based blind spot monitoring system to his 2009 Mini Cooper. After talking to the client about his concerns, we inspected the vehicle to see what solution we could provide. Thanks to one of the new safety products from Echomaster, we were able to come up with an easily integrated camera system that would help the client can see everything beside and behind the vehicle while driving.
Echomaster Blind Spot Camera System
This safety camera project is based on an Echomaster PMK-73BS Blind Spot Elimination Kit. The kit includes dedicated cameras for the left- and right-side view mirrors, a camera for the license plate and a replacement rearview mirror that includes a color LCD screen.
We started the project by mounting the PCAM-BS1-N cameras under the side view mirrors and running the wiring through the doors, through the rubber wiring boots in the door jamb and up to the safety system screen controller. Next, we installed the PCAM-10L camera just above the rear license plate using the supplied steel bracket. We ran the wiring through the vehicle, making sure that it would be completely invisible.
Replacement Rearview Mirror
We knew that the keyless entry system for the Mini Cooper has an antenna built into the factory rearview mirror. To keep this system functioning reliably, we extended the wiring for the factory mirror and mounted it securely in the dash. We tested the keyless system to optimize the placement of the mirror before buttoning things up.
The new Echomaster PMM-7333-PL rearview mirror includes three camera inputs with three dedicated trigger wires. The turn signals and reverse lights trigger the mirror to display the camera image automatically on the built-in 7.3-inch screen. After the mirror was installed and the cameras were tested, we adjusted the parking line display on the backup camera image to help the owner know when he was approaching a curb or wall.
Vehicle Safety Systems by Nu Image Audio
With the system installed and the vehicle reassembled, we took a quick drive around our parking lot to make sure all the cameras were aimed perfectly and that the system would perform the way the client intended. The vehicle owner returned to Nu Image Audio in Salina to see his new safety system. We gave him a thorough walk-through of the work we had performed and explained how to use the new blind spot camera system. He was thrilled with our craftsmanship and loved the functionality of the system.
