Nu Image Audio in Salina has been a remote car starters specialist since our founding in 2007. One of the most popular questions we get is, “Will a remote car starter void my warranty?” The short answer is no, but let’s dig deeper into this question.
Car Dealers Are Trying To Scare Their Customers
Here is a little history lesson. In the early 1970s, car dealers were telling people that unless they used a dealer brand and service, their warranties could be voided. Congress realized this was illegal, so in 1975, they enacted the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. In short, this legislation says a car dealer cannot void your warranty if you install aftermarket parts on your vehicle. The sad reality, though, is that some dealers seem to forget about this law. Here is a LINK to the FTC’s website that describes the law in more detail.
A Few Important Things To Keep In Mind
While Congress did pass a law saying an aftermarket part could not void your warranty, they also put provisions in it to protect car dealers from substandard products and labor. If you buy a low-quality remote starter and it damages the electrical system in your vehicle, then your warranty may be at risk. If someone does a poor installation that damages your vehicle’s electrical system, your warranty may be in jeopardy.
The good news for you is that our company only installs the finest products in the industry – ones that won’t cause any harm to your vehicle. In fact, our systems are often programmed with the very same software that the vehicle computer operates, so we are speaking its “native language.” Your vehicle doesn’t know if you or your remote starter is firing up the engine.
When it comes to installation quality, Nu Image Audio is becoming legendary for the quality of our work. Our technicians are well-trained in modern CAN-BUS vehicle networks, and our installation practices are reference-standard.
How Do I Handle A Combative Car Dealer?
If the subject of a remote start comes up when you are buying a new vehicle and the dealer tells you flat-out that you will lose your warranty unless they install it, we suggest picking a different dealer. If they aren’t honest with you on the front end, what is going to happen on the back end?
