A client from here in Salina recently visited Nu Image Audio to discuss options for his 1972 Toyota FJ audio system upgrade. The client had a clear vision of what he wanted from the audio system and needed our help to execute the plan. Because the FJ rolls on aggressive off-road tires that produce a lot of noise, he wanted an audio system that would be audible over the wind and tire noise and could withstand getting rained on. Also, he didn’t want a radio in the dash of the FJ.
1972 Toyota FJ Audio System Design
Finding a solution for the client’s list of requirements was quite simple. First, we turned to the impressive and well-appointed Sony XM-GS6DSP six-channel amplifier to power the system. This amp includes a Bluetooth receiver that allows the client to send music from his smartphone or listen to a streaming service like Pandora or Spotify without the need for an external source unit. We mounted the amp in the weatherproof toolbox under the passenger seat.
Custom Speaker and Subwoofer Solution
Next on the list was to provide a speaker solution that would sound great and play loudly enough for the client. We suggested the Rockford Fosgate T1675 coaxial speakers. This set of 6.75-inch speakers features aluminum-domed tweeters that are mounted on a bridge in front of the woofer. This design eliminates the need for a pole piece, thereby increasing the effective cone area of the woofer to produce more bass. We use these speakers on Harley-Davidson motorcycles quite often because they sound great and play loud!
We mounted the Fosgate speakers in a custom enclosure that sits behind the seats in the cargo area. The speakers are directed forward toward the front of the vehicle and share a common enclosure. On either side of the speakers is a pair of Memphis Power Reference PRX6D2 subwoofers. Each sub is housed in a dedicated 0.3-cubic-foot sealed enclosure and receives 300 watts of power from the Sony amp. The subs let the Rockford mids remain clear and detailed at high volume levels by unloading the need for them to attempt to reproduce bass frequencies.
We coated the enclosure with truck bed lining material to protect it from water damage and included slots at the rear corners of the enclosure to allow the output of the subs to feed into the listening area.
Classic Four-Wheeler Audio System
After a couple of days of work, we finished the project and the client returned to Nu Image Audio in Salina to check out his Toyota FJ audio system. He loves the way it sounds and how easy it is to use. If you are looking for a custom audio solution for your vehicle, drop by our shop or send us an e-mail using our online contact page.
